Freedom Flight School

paragliding
tandems

Tandem flights are a great way to see if paragliding is for you or if you just want to tick this off your bucket list.  It also makes a great gift, especially if it's a surprise!

Experience one of the most serene ways to fly with a certified instructor who will introduce you to the freedom of free flight.  In one morning or afternoon, you will generate a memory that will last you a lifetime.  If you ever had those dreams of floating high above the landscape - well let's make them a reality.
What should I expect?
  • Paragliding is a non-motorized way to fly
  • A paraglider is like a big parachute and you sit comfortably in a harness during flight
  • Drive up to launch takes about 20 minutes
  • For the takeoff you will have to run 20-30 feet in order to launch from the mountain
  • 10-45 minutes of flight time, depending on the weather conditions
  • The whole process usually takes around 90-120 minutes.
  • If you are susceptible to motion sickness, it would be wise to not have a big meal before flying, plus maybe consider Gravol

What's included?
  • Basic preflight and post flight briefings
  • Certified equipment: helmet, harness, wing, reserve parachute
  • A Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada (HPAC) accredited pilot
  • In-flight HD video/pics at no extra charge
  • A track log of your flight will be uploaded to the Internet so you can see your flight on a 3D terrain map complete with your speed, height and climb rates.  If you fly at the same time as a friend, you will see both of your flights on the same map!

What do I need to bring/wear?
  • Running shoes or day hikers
  • Pants and a light jacket/sweater...it can get cold if we are able to climb up high
  • Sunglasses & sunscreen
  • A bottle of water
  • Some snacks or even a picnic as there is a fridge and barbecue you can use
  • A memory stick/card, external hard drive or laptop so you can get your pics/videos right after your flight
  • Bring your family and friends to watch you fly!
Why should I fly with you guys?
  • We are fliers first, business people second.  If the conditions are good, we'll try to maximize our flight.  Ask other outfits the last time they flew up to 9300' above sea level on a tandem...our last time was August, 2018, see below!
  • Our landing zone boasts a 2000' grass runway and taxiways on nice level ground, not the sloped side of a hill
  • We're the only place in BC that you can do a hang gliding or powered trike tandem flight  the same day as your paragliding one, or different members of your group can try different types of flying depending on their preferences
  • You can sit and relax in our Pilot's Lounge, an outdoor covered deck with couches, WiFi, barbecue & fridge and watch all of the flying activity: paragliders & hang gliders landing, powered trikes and occasionally even small planes taking off and landing
  • If there are no immediate bookings after yours, if need be we will wait on launch for better weather conditions to maximize your flight time, even if it's an hour or two (provided you're happy to "parawait" too).  Be sure to ask other outfits if this is also their policy
  • Check us out on TripAdvisor and see what people have said about their experiences

What is takeoff like?
  • After driving to launch, your pilot will prepare and check the equipment, give you a safety briefing and dry run through
  • Your pilot will assist you with your harness and you will prepare for takeoff
  • A safety check is performed by the pilot
  • Depending on the wind, you will either walk or run a short distance on a grassy slope
  • The paraglider will lift you into the air and just like that, you're a bird!
During flight
  • Sitting comfortably in your harness, your hands are free, or you can hold on if you like.
  • During the whole takeoff, flying and landing, you can talk with your pilot.
  • If the conditions allow it, your pilot may let you control the wing for a few minutes if you want to try it.
  • Notify your pilot if you want a calm flight or want to experience a "roller coaster in the sky" with some spirals and wing overs.
  • Should you feel a little queasy, the pilot will fly down to the landing zone as quickly and gently as possible.
  • Enjoy the view!
Oh yeah, and we've got to land...
Picture
  • On our approach to the Freedom Flight Park, the pilot will coach you through the landing procedure which simply is leaning forward and standing up.
  • Similar to planes, we land into the wind to minimize our speed along the ground.
  • As we touch down, we take a few steps and then let the paraglider fall down behind us.
  • Next we take a picture of the huge smiles on everyone's faces!
